ABOUT AUGUSTINE IGWE

Gus has deep and extensive experience in insurance law and regulation and has represented various insurance regulated entities. His work for these entities has particularly emphasized the application and interpretation of insurance laws and regulations (both domestic and offshore jurisdictions), and covers broad areas, including regulatory, compliance, self-funded health insurance, stop loss insurance programs, insurance company acquisitions, property and casualty insurance operations, health insurance, premium finance, insurance services, managed care programs, contracts, corporate law, litigation management, regulatory audits and general corporate and business law. 

He has counseled and represented insurance, reinsurance, managing general underwriters, third party administrators, insurance agents and agencies, surplus lines entities and other corporations.  He has handled redomestications of insurers, including securing necessary certificates of authority for insurers in all 50 states. He has represented regulated insurance entities facing regulatory audits, investigations, and enforcement actions. He has assisted insurers navigate through the intricate rules of holding company registration system.

Gus has also represented other business entities and industries, including nonprofit entities. His services cover areas such as various corporate formations, evaluating corporate structures and their regulatory, tax and operational impacts, and advising clients on various legal issues facing their businesses.

Prior to starting his firm, Gus was a partner at Kaufman, Payton & Chapa, Farmington Hills, Michigan. He served as General Counsel of other insurance companies prior to joining Kaufman, Payton & Chapa.

Education

Gus graduated with honors from Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland, where he earned his B.S in Business Administration and M.B.A. in Finance. He earned his J.D.  Magna Cum Laude  from Michigan State University College of Law.  He was the Brief Editor of the First Place Team in the Cardozo Third Annual Entertainment/Communication Moot Court Competition, New York.
